BAJA, THE DESERT & MOBULA PLAYGROUND
On the edge of the Sea of Cortez, Baja California Sur is where cactus‑covered hills slide straight into deep blue water. Warm, clear seas meet nutrient‑rich currents, turning this coastline into a highway for life: mobula rays, dolphins, sea lions, whales, orcas, and more all use this corridor in spring.
In May, the stars of the show are the mobula rays. They gather in huge schools called “fevers,” stacking in layers under the surface and exploding out of the water like flying cards. Some days the ocean looks calm; other days it feels like it’s boiling with wings and splashes as far as you can see.
We’ll split our week between Cabo Pulmo National Park, a protected reef famous for huge gatherings of big fish, bull sharks and healthy coral, and La Ventana, a sleepy desert town that has become one of the best bases in the world for ocean safaris. From shallow reefs to deep blue, you’ll see just how wild this sea still is.
And what about Orcas?
Our boat will have the official permit to do Orca watching and get in the water if we see them. All following the new regulations. Not every boat doing tours has this permit but we wanted to make sure we wouldn’t miss our chance to be in the water with these apex predators.
Everything is possible but never guaranteed – the ocean decides who shows up, and that unpredictability is exactly what keeps this place magical.

Highlights of the trip

Wildlife is in fact wild. Nature cannot be controlled. We will do our best during this trip to organise sufficient excursions to give wildlife encounters the highest possible chance of happening. But please remember that we cannot control if the animals want to see us. We will always strive for respect and simplicity first.
Accommodation
Cabo Pulmo & La Ventana
You’ll spend the first part of the week in Cabo Pulmo, in a very convenient spot just steps from the beach, the dive centre, and local restaurants. Simple, comfortable rooms with private bathrooms give you everything you need to rest between dives. You wake up, walk a minute to the water or to the boat, and end your days under an insane blanket of stars in a tiny village of sandy streets, desert hills, and reef right in front of you – perfect for early starts and slow evenings after long sessions in the ocean.
For the second half of the trip we move to La Ventana, where we stay together in a beautiful, Mexican‑designed 5‑bedroom house about 150 m from the beach and a short walk from the main kite beach. Each room has a private bathroom, air conditioning, and a mini fridge. There’s a patio with an open kitchen, fibre‑optic internet, an office with an ocean view, storage for boards and gear, an inverse osmosis filter and water softener, a nice garden, secure parking, plus a brand new hot jacuzzi and pool. It’s the perfect base to spread out equipment, review photos, work a little if you need to, or just float between the pool, the patio, and the sea.
There is Wi‑Fi at both bases for checking in with home (when you want to), and plenty of calm corners to recharge. Most importantly, we stay right where the action is: near the launch points for our boats, so there are no long transfers or complicated logistics. You wake up, grab your gear, and you’re on the water.

Program
Day One
Arrive in La Paz and meet the group. From there we drive along the wild East Cape coastline to Cabo Pulmo. We’ll settle into our rooms, do a gear check and safety briefing, and, if conditions allow, enjoy an easy first session or shoreline walk to get you tuned into Baja’s desert‑meets‑ocean energy. Early night: tomorrow the real missions start. 😎
Day Two & Three – Cabo Pulmo National Park
After breakfast, we’ll head out by boat to explore **Cabo Pulmo National Park** over two full days.
– Guided scuba dives for certified divers (Open Water or higher), with sites chosen based on conditions and experience
– Snorkeling/freediving options where suitable, for guests who prefer to stay at the surface
– Big schools of fish, rays, turtles, healthy coral, and the feeling of being inside one of the most successful marine protected areas in the world
Afternoons are for rinsing gear, resting, and enjoying the slow rhythm of the village. These two days set the tone: you get comfortable in the water, with your gear, and with the group before we move into full ocean‑safari mode.
Day Four to Seven – La Ventana Ocean Safaris
On Day 4 we transfer up the coast to La Ventana, settle into our private villa, and start our sequence of open‑ocean missions.
From Day 4 to Day 7, our focus is:
- Mobula Ocean Safaris (4 days) – long sessions in the blue, searching for mobula “fevers,” dolphins, sea lions, whales at the surface, and any other pelagic visitors willing to say hi
- When we find life, we move calmly, slip in, and let the animals decide how close they want to come
- Depending on conditions and group energy, we may also spend time with local sea lions or explore different offshore areas to see what surprises the Sea of Cortez has in store
We’ll adjust the exact schedule based on weather, visibility, and where animals are most active. You’ll have time to rest, but these are not lazy beach days 😅 – we’re out on the water almost every day to maximise our chances of powerful encounters. This will not be a week you will easily forget. 🤿
Day Eight
After breakfast we pack up, drive back to La Paz, and say our goodbyes. There are no planned water activities on this day, so you can travel home relaxed catching an afternoon flight from La Paz.
How to get to Baja and Back
The best way to join Mobula Mania is to fly into La Paz (LAP) in Baja California Sur. Because our guests come from all over the world, we don’t include international flights, but from the moment you arrive in La Paz on the agreed arrival window, we’ll take care of you.
There are a few common routes you can use:
Option 1 – International flight to La Paz via Mexico City
Many airlines connect through Mexico City (MEX) to La Paz. This is often the simplest option if you’re flying from Europe or North America. Arrive in La Paz on May 15 in the morning, and we’ll pick you up for the transfer to Cabo Pulmo.
Option 2 – Fly to Los Cabos + Transfer to La Paz
You can also fly into Los Cabos (SJD), which usually has more direct international flights, and then take a shuttle/private transfer up to La Paz. This is a good option if you want to add extra days in Cabo before or after the expedition or if flights are more convenient.
Option 3 – Extra Nights Before/After
If you want to arrive earlier or stay longer in La Paz or elsewhere in Baja, you’re welcome to. We’ll share suggestions once you’re confirmed. These extra nights and transfers are not included in the expedition price.
Bonny & gava
FREEDIVING INSTRUCTORS & AWARD‑WINNING VIDEOGRAPHERS
We started Bonny & Gava as two 25‑year‑olds from Italy who fell in love with the underwater world and decided not to go back to “normal life.” Since then, we’ve spent most of our time chasing wild encounters with dolphins, sharks, whales, orcas, and everything in between – and turning those into small, curated expeditions for people like you.
Baja’s mobula migration has been on our dream list for years: desert landscapes, raw blue water, and some of the most explosive big‑animal action you can experience in the ocean. That’s why we built the exact trip we wish existed when we were still stuck behind our desks.
Before you join us, we’ll be here by email to help you:
- Choose flights and route your travel to La Paz
- Decide what gear to bring (or rent locally)
- Organise packing lists and any other travel details
So when you land in Baja, your only job is to jump in and enjoy the magic. ✨

Requirements
Ocean Comfort
Freediving or scuba diving certifications are NOT necessary to participate, but a very good level of swimming, fitness and comfort in open waters is essential to enjoy the experiences. Most activities in La Ventana are snorkeling/freediving from the surface in open ocean conditions.
Scuba diving in Cabo Pulmo is reserved for guests with at least an Open Water certification (or equivalent) and recent experience. If you prefer not to scuba, you can snorkel/freedive also in Cabo Pulmo.
Insurance
A dive insurance is mandatory for this trip, we recommend Dive Assure. You can check it out here.
Travel insurance is not mandatory but recommended.
Gear
Please bring your own gear if you own it (masks, fins, snorkels, wetsuits, cameras, weight belts, etc.). Weights will be provided for diving. Any additional equipment you need will be available for rental locally. A short or 3 mm wetsuit is recommended for Baja in May.
Language
It is important for every participant to speak English at a basic level so that we can all have a fun time together without leaving anyone out.

F.A.Q.
Can we see Orcas?
Short answer: yes, it’s possible – and we have the permit to be in the water with them (not everyone does).
Baja California Sur sits on a blue “highway” for big animals. In May, mobulas are the stars of the show, but the same rich waters can also attract orcas, which sometimes come in to hunt rays, dolphins, or other prey. This makes the Sea of Cortez one of the very few places in the world where you have a real chance of swimming with wild orcas in warm water instead of freezing Arctic seas.
That said, orcas here are not an everyday, predictable sight. Some seasons they show up a lot, other seasons less. That’s why we don’t want to sell this trip as a “guaranteed orca” expedition.
What makes this expedition special is how we operate when and if orcas do appear. The boat and crew we work with hold the official permit required in this area to do orca watching and put guests in the water with them. That means we can do things properly and legally.
So if you’re excited about an expedition full of possibility in a remote, raw and warm destination, and if you willing to accept as a gift whatever the ocean decides to give us that day, then you’re exactly who we designed this expedition for.
What species will I see besides Mobula Rays
The short answer: Mobulas are the main mission, but they’re rarely alone.
In May, the Sea of Cortez can feel like a conveyor belt of life. On this expedition, you might also see:
- Orcas are always around hunting in the blue but they are not spotted every day.
- Sea lions buzzing around you in the blue or lounging on rocks
- Dolphins bow‑riding the boat and sometimes joining our drifts
- Humpback and Blue whales (from the boat) passing through the area on their own routes
- Turtles, schooling fish, and occasional sharks in the mix
- Plus seabirds, flying fish, and all the small signs that tell us the ocean is alive that day
What exactly shows up changes day by day, year by year. Some days are quiet and we work hard just to find one good encounter. Other days feel like everything is happening at once.
Our promise is not a checklist of species. Our promise is that we’ll use all our experience, local knowledge, and time on the water to put you where the action is most likely to be – and that whatever shows up, we’ll treat it as a gift, not an entitlement.
What is the starting time of the trip?
The official beginning of the trip is the afternoon of May 15th in La Paz. We’ll meet for a welcome, drive to Cabo Pulmo, share our first meal together and explain what’s about to come over the next few days.
What is the ending time of the trip?
The trip will end after breakfast on May 22nd. You will have time to catch midday or afternoon flights out of La Paz (LAP) if you choose this mode of transportation.
How do I get to Baja and back?
Do I need diving certifications?
No certifications are required to join this expedition. A minimum fitness level and comfort while swimming in open water without assistance is required.
For snorkeling/freediving activities no certifications are required.
All activities in La Ventana are snorkeling/freediving with most of the time spent near the surface enjoying the show.
Scuba diving in Cabo Pulmo is reserved for certified divers (Open Water or higher). If you’re not certified or prefer not to scuba dive, you can snorkel/freedive here as well. All water activities are optional – you can always sit out a session if you need to rest.
Are there any optional extra activities?
Depending on conditions and availability, extra scuba dives in Cabo Pulmo are possible in the afternoon.
Additional ocean activities in Baja may be possible before or after the expedition. If you’d like to add more time in the area, let us know and we’ll point you toward trusted local operators. Any extras are not included in the expedition price.
Does Mexico require a VISA?
Whether you need a visa for Mexico depends on your nationality and length of stay.
Citizens of all North American countries (USA, Canada) and all European countries (including the EU/Schengen Area and the UK) do not require a visa to visit Mexico for tourism or short stays up to 180 days. Instead, travelers need to obtain an FMM (Multiple Immigration Form) upon arrival.
Please check the official Mexican immigration website or your local consulate for the most up‑to‑date requirements for your passport.
Is there wifi or signal in the accommodations?
Yes, there is Wi‑Fi at our bases in Cabo Pulmo and La Ventana, although speeds can be slower than in big cities. When we are out at sea, you should expect little to no phone signal. E‑SIMs and local SIM cards are available in Mexico if you need connectivity, but it’s also a great excuse to log off for a while and dive deeper into nature. 😉
Should I bring extra cash?
Credit cards are accepted in many places in Baja, but we recommend bringing some Mexican pesos or USD in cash for tips, dinners, small shops, and snacks. ATMs are available in larger towns, but it’s safer to have some cash with you before heading to more remote areas.
What are the sleeping options?
You can either have a shared double or twin room (you can share it with a friend or partner travelling with you). Otherwise you can share it with someone else joining the retreat.
What if I'm travelling solo?
This is a great opportunity then! The majority of our guests are young (<40 years old) solo travellers looking to make awesome ocean friends. We also get couples who are up to have some fun with other like-minded people. All in all, we’ve always had AMAZING groups and EVERYONE has made incredible friendships during our group trips.
What if I am vegan? Or have allergies?
Please let us know of any dietary requirements and we will do our best to fit your needs.
Can I split the payment?
Yes absolutely! As explained here, we only ask for the deposit right away, then 50% is due by October 15th and 100% by January 15th. You can split this in how many payments fits you best.
If you need further assistance on this you can reach out directly to us at retreats@bonnyandgava.com.
Am I too beginner / advanced for this trip?
In general, the average level of our groups will be strong snorkelers who love the ocean but aren’t pro freedivers or expedition divers. Some people will have more experience (certified divers, freedivers), a few will be closer to beginners, and most will fall somewhere in between.
The good news: experience level is not a problem on this trip.
In La Ventana, most encounters happen from the surface in open water with guides explaining what to do and when to enter the water. It’s incredibly fun and emotional whether you’ve done 100 ocean trips or this is your first real wildlife adventure.
For Cabo Pulmo, dives are guided by experienced local instructors within a protected marine park, following clear safety briefings and protocols. If you’re newer to diving, it’s a great way to experience a world‑class reef with support. If you’d rather skip scuba, you always can – snorkeling/freediving is available here as well.
If you’re more advanced, you won’t be “bored” or held back. Baja in mobula season is one of the richest big‑animal environments on Earth: long sessions in open water, fewer people in the water, and truly wild behaviour. It’s a dream playground for ocean lovers, freedivers, and anyone who loves observing animals up close.
Even in the (very unlikely) case that someone couldn’t dive or freedive for any reason, it would still be an amazing week. Mobulas and many other animals come close to the surface, and we’ve seen again and again that people have life‑changing experiences just from the boat and surface.
